Number System
Number system is a system in which numbers are used to count objects and to measure fundamental quantities.
Digit is a symbol used to represent quantity.
0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 are called digits.
A number is a value used for counting. A number is formed using digits, repetition of digits and combination of digits. A number can be written with one or more digits.
Single or one digit numbers:
Numbers with only one digit are called one digit or single digit numbers. 0 to 9 are all one digit numbers. 1 is the smallest one digit number and 9 is the greatest one digit number.
Natural numbers are numbers that are used for counting. 1 is the smallest natural number. They are also called counting numbers. 1,2,3,.... are called natural numbers.
Whole numbers are numbers starting from zero and includes all natural numbers. 0, 1, 2, 3,...... are whole numbers. 0 is the smallest whole number.
Zero represents empty space or null quantity. Zero is a place holder in the number system. Zero in itself has no value but plays an important role based on its position in all other numbers. Example: 15, 105, 150 are all holding different values mainly based on the position of zero.
The position of a digit determines the value of a number. So the place value chart is highly useful in determining the value of a number. The value of a number increases as we move towards left in the place value chart. The order of the place value chart in the Indian number system is as follows:
Ones, tens, hundreds , thousands, ten thousands, lakh, ten lakh, crore, ten crore
How to count numbers?
Any number added with zero gives the same number.
Example:
1 + 0 = 1
2 + 0 = 2
Any number added with one gives the next number.
Example:
2 + 1 = 3
3 + 1 = 4
How to add one digit numbers?
Addition is the method of getting a bigger number by combining two numbers. The result obtained through this method is called the total or sum. First of all the ones place of two numbers are added. The result is either a one digit number itself or a two digit number. But the result will be definitely a greater number than the two numbers that are added.
The symbol used for addition is '+' which means plus
3 + 4 = 7
6 + 2 = 8
Two digit numbers:
Numbers with two digits are called two digit numbers. Examples are 25, 32, 65, 78 etc.
10 is the smallest two digit number.
99 is the largest two digit number.
How to write ones and tens?
32 = 30 + 2 = 3 TENS and 2 ONES
68 = 60 + 8 = 6 TENS and 8 ONES
70 = 70 + 0 = 7 TENS and 0 ONES
